The Scent of the Mediterranean — a Land of Islands, Places, and People

Mountain biking is the kind of activity that truly pulls you into nature — into places that are quiet and less traveled, where real wilderness still lives on, where remote villages rest among pastures, forests, and wide open landscapes. Places where life moves slower, and people live differently.

That’s exactly what mountain biking along the Adriatic coast of Croatia feels like — a world woven with countless islands, beautiful bays, and hilly terrain dotted with small villages and coastal towns. It’s a true mountain biking paradise, with a unique charm — a blend of sea, culture, people, Mediterranean scents, and food that feeds every ride with emotion and authenticity.

I’ve been exploring trails by bike for nearly three decades now — from the Alps and the Dolomites to Morocco, Georgia, and Mongolia. Yet, there’s something special about the Adriatic coast that always draws me back. This eastern stretch of the Adriatic, with its rugged shoreline, mostly belongs to Croatia — starting in the north with the Istrian peninsula, continuing through the Kvarner Gulf with islands like Cres and Krk, across Northern Dalmatia, and all the way south to the magical region of Southern Dalmatia, where Dubrovnik reigns at the very end.

Across this entire region you’ll find national parks, nature parks, and countless untouched wonders — true natural treasures waiting to be discovered. The Adriatic coast fascinates with its diversity: you can hop from the mainland to an island, connect trails between them, or stay inland and explore the mountain ranges — Učka in Istria, Velebit, Omiška Dinara, or Biokovo.

Cycling in Croatia, especially along the Adriatic coast, has a character of its own. It’s true that it may not offer the same abundance of flowy trails as some other famous mountain biking destinations — but that’s not what it’s about. This is about the experience. About the adventure. About the feeling of blending biking with the sea, the bays, and the rhythm of life along the coast. This is Croatia by mountain bike: a meeting of sea and stone, tradition and adventure — where every turn of the pedals brings you closer to the heart of the Mediterranean.

The mild Mediterranean climate, filled with scents — especially in spring when everything blooms — is simply divine. Small coastal villages, where life is simple and people still live close to nature, add a timeless charm. Here, you soak in tradition: you meet fishermen in the morning, stroll through local markets full of homemade delicacies, and visit winemakers — some of them truly exceptional — in regions like Pelješac and beyond.

If I roughly add it all up, I’ve ridden over 3,000 kilometers along the Adriatic coast — a winding ribbon of sea breeze, sun, and stone. I’ve cycled across almost every major island, and many of the smaller ones, scattered like pearls along Croatia’s shoreline. Of course, there’s also Istria — that magical, green peninsula often called Little Tuscany. And rightly so: the vineyards, the olive groves, the rolling hills — it feels like Tuscany’s smaller sister across the Adriatic. The mountain ranges in between are no less impressive — rugged, raw, and demanding, the kind that make every summit feel earned.

In the end, I can only say this — for any mountain biker seeking a true experience, rather than perfectly groomed trails, riding along the Adriatic will get under your skin. Especially, if you’re the kind of rider who loves to enjoy life at a slower pace — who appreciates fine wine, homemade olive oil, fresh figs, and the essence of Mediterranean cuisine. If you enjoy wandering through narrow, stone-paved streets of small coastal towns, diving into crystal-clear water after a long day in the saddle, and just letting the day unfold — then this is your place!

In Croatia, especially in Dalmatia, there’s no need to rush. Everything moves a little slower, more relaxed — more Mediterranean. As the Dalmatians like to say: “Take it easy, don’t worry — everything will be fine.” Just one rule though — when heading out to the islands (and there are plenty!), make sure you bring spare tubes and a solid tubeless setup. There’s plenty of sharp rock out there — and that’s a fact, carved in stone!

A Personal Note

As a small encouragement to wrap things up – this text was written by me, Matey, simply someone who loves mountain biking along the Adriatic coast. Over the years of exploration, I’ve designed several successful mountain biking tours, such as: Trans Istria, Trans MTB Croatia South, Trans Balkan Bikepacking (which includes the Adriatic coast), Dalmatian MTB Island Hopping, Croatia MTB Epic Tour (which stretches along the entire Croatian seaside). I organized a MTB camp in Dalmatia, as well as Women Ride Together Weekend, a project that takes place at various locations in Istria.

At our company, I’m responsible for: developing mountain biking itineraries for private groups, digitalizing routes, reviews of locations as well as adapting tours and trails for self-guided riders, which are passionate about MTB.

Along the way, I’ve met many local people and made many friends – winemakers, olive growers, and others that give this region its special character. I put a lot of emphasis on making every tour as authentic as possible, so that every rider can truly feel and experience the environment they’re riding through.

In short, if you’re looking to experience this part of the world by mountain bike, I’ll be happy to help. This region is something I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone who values not only biking itself, but also everything that comes with it – exploration, nature, and meaningful experiences along the way.

Mountain biking tour from the heart of the Julian Alps to the Mediterranean town of Piran by the Adriatic Sea.

Mountain Biking along extraordinary single trails, on remote gravel roads, high mountain mule tracks, forest roads, through vineyards,… through western Slovenia, is one of the most beautiful biking experiences. For all biking »overachievers«, this mountain biking adventures can be compared to a well known Michelin star for gourmets. One simply goes on the tour because it is full of greatness, with a lot of geographical diversity, cycling dynamics and a good measure of pampering along the way.

I’ve become acquainted with Trans Slovenija Tour a decade ago and it has simply enthrilled me. Not so much due to mountain biking on trails, which are by the way not scarce, but due to the variety of the terrain, the explorative-connecting biking along with a good dose of unique locations – remarkable destinations. For an example: you jump on a bike and ride it across the Alps, Soca Valley and red Karst region all the way to the Adriatic Sea.

In a few days of biking you are able to connect the most beautiful part of the Julian Alps and Triglav National Park with the charming town of Piran by the Adriatic. Along the way are numerous amazing towns, delicious culinary, simplicity of the locals, … Farms, vineyards, restaurants, natural wonders which are difficult to access, crystal clear rivers, … This tour is considered a pure biking delight.

Trans Slovenia tour offers a unique experience – it is an escape from the »Crazyness!« of every day. This is achieved by daily biking tours on secluded paths and villages and returning back to urban environment. As a mountain biker it means a lot to me that I can clear my head, focus and set out on a daily dose of biking, knowing that I will return to a comfortable bed and tasty dinner. I am the type of biker that likes a certain amount of comfort. And this is exactly what this mountain biking tour across the western Slovenia offers, as it is considered as various in just the right amount, the stages are very varied, full of challenges and wonderful trails.

I won’t say that the daily stages are easy, that they don’t require a certain amount of basic biking preparedness, but they are also not demanding. Wonderful is the fact that a biker can choose between an easier and more demanding trail – daily stage – according to the altitude, length and difficultness of the terrain – technically more demanding and easier trails as well as beautiful gravel roads. Therefore this tour is appropriate for a wide specter of biking enthusiasts and long distance biking tours.

When we speak about mountain biking and experiencing a landscape, we mostly think of a fresh biking destination, which offers something special, which isn’t overcrowded and burdened. A tour which offers a biker a certain amount of exploration, adventure and enjoyment. We, mountain bikers, are a certain sort of people, for it is important to us that we obtain a sufficient amount of good riding. Trans MTB Slovenia is just that, a long distance biking tour, which offers a lot of excellent biking in remarkable surroundings, in areas where many hearty people live and work.

When I rode this full tour for the first time a few years ago I didn’t stop. I return to it to this day and treat myself to certain stages of the trail, the ones that enthrill me. There is so much variety in this amazing tour that one never gets tired of it. Especially due to the fact that the landscape on the trail changes all the time, there is always something new going on, extra options to treat your taste buds as well as other things on offer, which are needed for a satisfied and happy biker.

At the end I can write that this Trans MTB Slovenia is one of those biking adventures you simply must experience. It is worth every drop of sweat, worth that good feeling of tiredness at the end of each stage, muddy stains as well as a possible bruise or two. All of those little things that a mountain biker needs for a great biking day.

The Most Beautiful Cycling tour

One trip, three countries and eight days on two wheels.

One trip, three countries, eight days on two wheels. Crossing the picturesque Julian Alps in Slovenia. A pizzaslice of Italy, the 42km coastline of Slovenia and then further on the old Parenzana railwayline in Croatia. On day one you soon become aware, whilst cycling, of Slovenia’s pristine friendlyness. Spectacular stone castles look down on Lake Bled and many tourists. We enjoy it on our new horses around the lake.

Day two takes us up the Radovna valley in the Triglav National Park. We are so proud to have packed all our essentials in four panniers. Now I know how to pack for the rest of my life. Goodbye to suitcases bulging with clothes never to be worn. Hot but pleasant once the bike-aircon kicks in. Then the wonderful D2 cyclepath. Effectively utilising old railway bridges and infrastructure up to Kranjska Gora. By taxi we cross the Julian Alps through the spectacular 50 hairpin bends. The Vršic Pass is Slovenia’s highest at 1611m. The Alps tower up to 2864m. Then down in the emerald Soča Valley.

Day three starts with the best breakfast in Slovenia at the Hotel Sonje ob Soci in Bovec. The owner’s wife is more than a chef, perhaps a humble food magician. She takes pride in her tasty delicacies. My favourite was the Zuchini carpacio, fresh from her garden. The whitewater rafting was calm. The personel enthuastic. Tolmin via Kobarid was hot at 40 degrees. Marko has a good bikeshop in Tolmin. He made the necessary adjustments to Benita’s derailer that gave her more gears for those uphills. The Hotel Krn (or Dvorec) has had a facelift with the new owner. The old criticism in Tripadvisor is unfair. It was, however, our only hotel without aircond. The chef was friendly and recommended an excellent Sauvignon Blanc of the area.

Day four included the longest and toughest climb for me. Benita had less problems. Fortunately uphills are rewarded with views and downhills. All the sweat disappeared with the sumptuous meal with superb wines at Medana. Thanks, Tina, for this special treat. Our taxi driver to Nova Gorica was punctual and knowledgable. We discussed Slovenia’s unusual 10 day war for independence in 1991. All our drivers were proud ambassadors.

Day five started with the taxi up to Stanjel. Absorbing the beauty downhill was shear pleasure. We often stopped at bars for water or coffee. English was never a problem. A cool down shower fell when we were in the Skočjan Caves. The pickup at Lipica worked well. Majestic Lipizzaners. We laughed when we crammed the bikes and 2 tall bodies into the taxi. With Benita on my lap we arrived at Hotel Roma in Trieste. I washed our cycling clothes every evening. It dried sufficiently overnight.

Day six started with the ferry crossing to Muggia. The ferry pickup is near the hotel. It takes 30 minutes to cross. It is cheap and you avoid all the Trieste traffic. At Muggia cycle back for 10 minutes towards Trieste. The Parenzana route is after the first small bridge. Out of Italy and back into Slovenia with its short scenic 42 km coastline. The clean well-lit 550m old railway tunnel says much of a country ensuring safe rides for cyclists. Portoroz is like a beehive of tourists. All enjoying their vacations.

Day seven we cross the Croatian border. All our hotels on the entire trip were superb. We drank the local water in our bathrooms. We slept very comfortably. Yes, there were days when the cumaltive affect was felt in my 67 year old legs but the rewards made it disappear. Regarding the required fitness level for the trip.

In Cape Town we try to cycle regularly. We are not fanatics. It was good to experience en route how popular tourism cycling is. Croatia’s section of the Parenzana is more stoney. We had 3 punctures and were ably assisted by our host from B&B Antico in Motovun. Please convey my appreciation to him again. Day eight to Porec we decided to remain on tar. To sum up. The trip has incredible potential and many of my friends will partake.

Parenzana – Cyclist Trail of Health and Friendship

Cycle along the Parenzana – From Trieste (Italy) to Poreč (Croatia).

Towns on the Northern Adriatic and especially those on the Istrian Peninsula are remarkable in their beauty. Istra has a special Mediterranean charm, considered by many as the new Tuscany, with far more homely people and indigenous surroundings. Istria, with its numerous roads, side paths and mild climate, can easily be ranked as one the most beautiful parts of Europe for cycling. Istria is connected and interweaved by many cycling routes – both on the Slovenian and Croatian Part of Istria. Among the prettiest and well known is the Parenzana Trail – a former railway route that connected Trieste in Italy with Poreč on the Croatian side of Istria.

Cycling on the Parenzana is a true cycling poetry. The goal is to cycle to the finish line in Poreč, to cycle a route that is 130 kilometres long, a route that was once a railway, and while doing this one intensively experiences the landscape, towns and meets the local people. Parenzana is in its core a cycling adventure with experiencing the best of Istria. The route that goes through Italy and Slovenia is asphalt / paved and one cycles through towns which are linked well to tourism and offer plenty of good infrastructure. When one pushes the pedals towards the Croatian part of Istria, an even better cycling exploration begins on the narrow route of the former railway, with the surroundings and paths kept as they once were. One cycles on a stony and gravel route, part also on asphalt and part on the typical Istrian soil with its well known red color – a part of the route from Vižnjada to Poreč. The tour is not demanding, but it also isn‘t considered as easy, for one has to conquer several gentle slopes – the toughest one being the one from Mirna to Motovun – as well as several stony descends, where one has to hold the handlebar firmly in the hands.

Parenzana is one pure cycling pleasure. On our cycling path we indulged with excellent Istrian culinary, saw charming towns and villages – Grožnjan, Motovun,… visited Sečovlje Salina Nature Park and felt the warmth of the Adriatic Sea. We slept in small, boutique hotels and with local people on agro tourisms. These are considered as a good choice, an excellent experience for one is in close contact with homemade food/culinary and local Istrian people. If we add numerous well known taverns with Istrian wine, the package is complete. Cycling on the Parenzana is more than just cycling, it is an active experience of Istria, taking it all in – in slow sips.

The Parenzana Trail was once a narrow gauge railway that connected Trieste, Italy with Istria’s sea facing town, Poreč. It operated until 1935, carrying people and goods between quaint villages and port cities. The journey was slow, around six or seven hours, because the heavy trains had to snake up and down hills, and through tunnels and towns. With the advent of more efficient modes of transportation, the Parenzana became obsolete. The Italian fascist dictator, Mussolini had the steel train tracks dismantled after 1935. They were loaded onto a boat and shipped down the Adriatic to be smelted and used toward WWII axis power war efforts. Weighed down by too much tonnage of steel, the ship sank to the bottom of the sea.

Amazing Gravel Grinding around Slovenia

Gravel cycling is slowly inspiring cyclists across Europe. On the cycling scene, there are more and more lovers of secluded, dynamic roads and various gravel paths that take cyclists through the most beautiful parts of the country and offer them an intense exploration, a true experience. Being a cyclist, cycling fast, even bold, totally sporty, but still exploring the remote places is something truly wonderful. Gravel cycling in Slovenia offers all this and much more.

I wonder often what would be a great location for cyclists, who love macadam roads, now and then choose a pleasant single trail, rush along fast gravel roads, sliding through bends, indulging in mud and puddles, enjoy socializing, local culinary, good coffee along the way… I pretty much follow the happenings in the gravel cycling scene, where all the most beautiful stories of this kind develop, where the gravel communities are built, where the gravel cyclists go in search of the most amazing experiences. Personally, I’m a big fan of gravel cycling, and my home destinations are primarily Slovenia and Croatia. Every now and then, I also go to Austria and Italy. In light of all the cycling and experience to date, I have found that any location can be good for gravel grinders – there are always secluded roads that connect areas along side trails, and there are possibilities for exploring the unknown everywhere.

For gravel grinders, Slovenia offers a variety of cycling options in a truly preserved nature, full of surpluses and fascinating locations. In such a small country, with outer boundaries in the shape of a hen, the cyclist can experience a really diverse variety. From flat cycling through fields of corn and vineyards in the eastern part of the country, to exploring the vibrant coastal landscape in the west. In the north-west and north a cyclist experiences the pre-alpine and true alpine mountains with numerous valleys, passes and crystal clear rivers. The interior of Slovenia is also diverse, crisscrossed with gravel roads and dotted with forests and numerous remote regions. The surroundings of the capital Ljubljana offer beautiful routes and longer tours for gravel grinders. Slovenia is also interesting because natural, rural environment begins immediately on the border of large urban settlements, which in turn enables a unique exploratory gravel cycling. In short, this seemingly small country of ours simply does not leave you indifferent, on the contrary, you can experience a diversity and variety of cycling unlike anywhere else.

I can say that my most beautiful gravel cycling tours are those in the alpine world, these are also in the highest number because I live just at the gates of the Julian Alps. I usually ride through the beautiful forests of Pokljuka, Jelovica and explore the Karavanke Mountains, where I embark on more demanding roads that lead over peaks. I like to connect these tours to the Soča Valley, where you can find numerous mule tracks and further into the vibrant hills of Gorizia, the land of vineyards, cherries and excellent cuisine. Later in the year, I set off for the Slovenian Karst, which smells of teran and provides excellent cycling on macadam roads and karst trails.

At the beginning of the season, which is sometimes at the end of winter, the first choice is the Slovenian Coast, with the beautiful and vibrant Istria’s inland. Imagine speed biking on a great gravel road through olive groves. Pure ecstasy! The interior of Slovenia is interspersed with forest roads and gravel roads that connect small villages, remote places and enable locals and foresters to navigate the terrain. All these paths and roads call for pleasure cycling and exploration: Ljubljana with its surroundings, Notranjska, Kočevje forests, Styrian hills, … Unique and enjoyable graveling. All this diversity of cycling and landscapes in Slovenia can be combined into a multi-day cycling tour, a true bike packing experience. Everyone, who goes into this kind of cycling, can find wonderful places for camping, lodging in mountain lodges or in villages with the locals. Slovenia is a pretty safe country, with friendly people, who are happy to help, so it’s cycle-friendly from this point of view.

Every gravel cyclist has high expectations and Slovenia, with its macadam infrastructure, which is traversed in all directions, and with its pristine natural environment, is a great choice. It is almost impossible for a gravel enthusiast to stay cool, on the contrary, with a wide choice of great gravel trails, experiences and places along the way, it will warm the heart of every cyclist, or even “burn” them with a real adventure.

Slovenia is The Next Big Biking Destination

Slovenia is a remarkable country and absolutely perfect for bikers. There are numerous mountain biking areas, all types of terrain for adventure-gravel biking, diverse and dynamic routes for road cycling, demanding mountain passes and remote road connections. A visit of Slovenia with a bike is an excellent choice for all types of bikers, also for bike travelers and new E-bike nomads. I can say, without much exaggeration, that this little chicken-shaped country offers a lot of everything and all that a biker needs for living out his/her dreams and goals.

I have been an active biker for the past three decades and in this time I’ve experienced first class biking moments that took place in various parts of Slovenia. I mostly like to set out on a tour in the central or north-western part of Slovenia, where the landscape is more hilly, with a network of valleys, lakes and rivers. One can also find more demanding biking trails in these parts, which makes me happy and fills me with great energy. I am a diverse biker and as such can always find good biking tours and challenges. While biking, I become acquainted with towns, villages, mountains, passes and secluded pearls of nature in my homeland. I can without any hesitation say that Slovenia offers remarkable routes for mountain bikers as well as bikers which search for more demanding enduro trails and for all those, who find pleasure in longer mountain biking tours (also multi-day ones).

My marvelous little country, where a tourist slogan stands – Feel Green, Active and Healthy – offers excellent chances for an adventure or the so called gravel biking. Slovenia has a network of gravel and forest roads, which are just right for all cyclo-cross, adventure (gravel), travel (trekking) bikers or bikepacking way of biking. Those can find a bikers’ paradise in this country, full of explore cycling and discovering unspoiled natural areas. Longer cycling tours can be very well feasible as multi-day, stage cycling with an overnight in cosy, small hotels and private pensions along the route. One can find dynamic trails through forests, across vast plains, wine groves, corn fields, green meadows and mountain mule tracks. While on tour, a biker can become acquainted with new towns and villages, meet nice and friendly locals as well as experience charming accommodations for a much deserved rest after an active day. For some bike trekkers with panniers on the bike, who like to “travel slow – explore more”, Slovenia can be just right and a very appropriate destination, due to its small scale and close proximity of villages and towns. One can cycle across Slovenia in one week and experience landscapes from the Pannonia planes all the way to the Adriatic Sea.

I must admit, I am not a road cyclist, but I find myself of a road and cyclo-gravel bike now and then and set out on a longer, dynamic stage. I love to ascend on the well-known Vrsic mountain pass, sometimes even higher, on the marvelous Mangart saddle or other popular passes in the Julian Alps. These are first class winding roads, full of magnificent views and cycling challenges. Slovenia is a paradise for road cycling, for one can choose between lowland areas in the east or mountainous areas in the south-west, by the Adriatic Coast, or the more challenging and true mountainous stages in the north-western part of Slovenia. Road cyclists, which have already visited Slovenia, can say that the stages are simply remarkable and the landscape and nature unique. Everything is in close proximity and there is enough good quality infrastructure along the roads, which makes cyclists feel very safe.

I can proudly say that this little land “on the sunny side of the Alps”, a term our locals like to use, is an excellent choice for all types of bikers: lovers of mountain trails, road cyclists as well as travel (trekking) researchers and E-bike users. Slovenia is an undiscovered biking gem, which is slowly being polished, slowly awakening and this is an excellent opportunity for all bikers to experience unspoilt and remarkable natural wonders. Slovenia is considered Europe’s green destination.

Mountain Biking around Slovenian Alps

Pristine Mountains, healthy forests and clean rivers. It is Slovenia!

Explore the land where every bike tour is very personal.

The feeling, when one is riding a bike down a narrow, winding trail to the valley is indescribable. The emotions, when one is surrounded by pristine nature of Slovenian mountains and Triglav National Park are unforgettable. The sensations, when at the end of the tour, somewhat dirty, sweaty and tired, one sits down for a cool beer and a delicious treat in a local gostilna, are amazing and most welcome. All this and more is mountain biking on numerous trails, remote lanes and forest tracks in the Slovenian Alpine world, which offers, unlike many neighboring destinations, an abundance of primal biking explorations.

Slovenia is a marvelous country for mountain biking. One can find here somewhat forgotten paths, diverse single trails and remote forest roads, which connect mountain meadows as well as the valleys below. Biking trails can be found for every biker, in all seasons, with the exception of the winter time, when it is usually too cold and there is too much snow: even in the lower areas – at the foothills of the Alps. It is best to bike in the spring time, from around April to June and then later, from the middle of August to October, when the temperatures are most acceptable for pedaling. The summer months are also a good choice, if one takes into consideration the fact, that some days will be very hot, especially once the trails get down to the valleys. A refreshing fact is that one can find many crystal clear rivers and lakes, which are appropriate for a quick jump and a cooling swim. Exceptional quality is also the fact that the water in the mountain streams and rivers is drinkable.

Nature in the mountainous Slovenian world is remarkable. Slovenia is the green paradise of Europe, which maybe the local population is not so much aware of. We are proud owners of pristine mountains, healthy forests and clean rivers. Even the air is different and one can breathe in the oxygen with full lungs. I have experienced this on numerous occasions, while biking with friends high up in the Karavanken Mountains. We took in full breaths of clean alpine air, paddling somewhere high uphill. I usually stop at a certain point of the tour, sit on a tree stump or rock and simply admire the surrounding landscape, take in the view and fully “recharge my batteries”. These are such pleasant feelings, which are difficult to explain, like the ones, when after a biking tour, I step under a shower all tired and sweaty. Simply, amazing.

Mountain Biking in the Slovenian mountains is an unforgettable and pristine adventure. At each kilometer one bikes, it is possible to experience something special and unexpected. Slovenia is almost a little mysterious, when the word touches mountain biking and biking tours. On one hand, one can find marvelous biking trails, but on the other hand, a lot of energy and good will has to be put into making it all work – to make it a surplus biking tour. Once Slovenia gets under your skin, with its mountains, nature and biking paths, there is no way back.. you will return again and again.. for more.
